What Really is the Spring Lake Fire Department?
Our department is an all-volunteer department protecting the Ulster Fire District #1, one section
of the Town of Ulster just outside of Kingston, NY in the mid-hudson valley. Our district is
primarily suburban, but with some undeveloped woodlands, a section of a superhighway, a
high school, a high voltage substation, and some light industry; we cover a variety of land use
types. Our department works out of one station using three engines and a light rescue pick-up truck.
As is the case with most departments, the majority of our calls are EMS/medical calls, but because
of the variety of land uses in the district, we also train for and respond to woods fires and grass
fires, motor vehicle accidents including superhighway accidents, power line calls, search and
rescue, possible haz-mat calls, and an assortment of other types of calls, from tragic to humorous.
Like most departments, we pride ourselves on trying to be ready to assist, no matter what the
emergency. We have been averaging 125 to 150 calls/year but are seeing a gradual increase in this number.
On a fairly regular basis, we share mutual aid with the Hurley Fire Dept in one direction and the
Bloomington Fire Dept in the other.
All residents of the district are invited to stop in at the firehouse on any drill night (Mondays 7:00 PM) to look around,
to meet us, and to consider joining us. We have need for members in almost any capacity, from firefighters to
secretarial work. Whatever your skills, you almost certainly can be of assistance to us and to
your neighbors through the department. Come down and look us over, and see if you
can join the greatest brotherhood in the world, that of firefighters.
