SLFD Presidental Greeting

First and foremost I would like to thank you for visiting our website.

Spring Lake Fire Department, Inc. is a 501(c)3 Domestic Not-For-Profit Corporation, first incorporated on September 21, 1955. Our organization is charged with providing fire protection for the residents and businesses of Ulster Fire District #1. We pride ourselves on providing the highest level of life and property protections services to the members of our community. Our members undergo rigorous training to stay up to date on the latest techniques and technologies available to fire protection personnel. Some areas in which we maintain proficiency are: education and training on fire suppression, rescue, hazardous condition management, pre-hospital emergency medical care, fire investigation, pre-planning, and numerous public education services.

The members of Spring Lake Fire Department consist of the active firefighters who serve the district as well as non-firefighting or social members who assist with the administrative operations of the fire company. We are a 100% volunteer organization and our members encompass a vast spectrum of professions, in addition to our company duties. Our company conducts annual elections for the positions of fire officers, who serve the fire district, as well as administrative officers and trustees that manage the operations of the fire company.

In addition to the initiatives that the Spring Lake Fire Department takes to support our volunteers, the membership also pursues a number of community training initiatives. Our members frequently volunteer their time to provide First Aid and CPR Training to residents, lifeguards, summer camp staff and day care providers. In addition our members have and will continue to sponsor fundraisers in support of various fire service and community initiatives ranging from toy drives to youth sports teams.

Spring Lake Fire Department, Inc receives no tax funding, and all of our endeavors are made possible through the support of our community, grants, and various investments made by the company over the years. Recently, the company was able to purchase four lap-top computers for the fire apparatus to assist us in residential and commercial pre-planning, and vehicle extrication. In addition, over the past several years the generosity of our community has allowed us to purchase two Automatic External Defribillators to better protect the community. We have provided the fire district with a blast-proof air bottle fill station and wild-land firefighting clothing to provide for added safety to our members.

Few people recognize the differences between a fire company and a fire district. A fire district (in our case Ulster Fire District #1) is the government entity with publicly elected fire commissioners that collect and manage the tax payer funds to provide residents with fire protection. The district owns and maintains the firehouse and all of the fire equipment as well as approves and oversees the active firefighters and officers that serve the district. The fire commissioners, fire officers, and firefighters are all unpaid employees of the fire district when they are performing their duties.

Our motto is "Others Before Self" and our members truly embody that motto. Regardless of the time, day or night, the weather, or the day of the year, our members leave their families and put their lives on the line to protect members of our community. I am proud to be a member of an organization so dedicated to making our community a better place. On behalf of the Spring Lake Fire Department, I would like to sincerely thank the generous members of community whose support makes it possible for us to carry out our mission.
